| Running through the Sales Field |
| 2008.11.26 07:08:47 | |
![]() Throughout most of October I was fortunate to spend time with clients in the field. I observed sales guys pitching existing and potential customers. I managed conversations and answered questions when my sales guys were engaged with other discussions. I spent a lot of time in the car with sales guys talking about what they need to support their efforts, how we need to deliver our message, and why we are successful and why we are not successful. Every time I go on customer visits I am reminded how important it is to stay directly connected to the customer. By directly, I mean interacting with them face-to-face actively and inactively. It is so important to learn from these interactions about their issues and understand how our products/services meet their needs and overcome their issues. Each interaction gives a marketer more insight and knowledge about the customers’ culture. With this holistic view marketers can approach every strategy and tactic with intention and customer insight. Plus, it also gives you ideas for potential new products or line extensions. Everyone knows that business travel is not glamorous and stresses out the home front. But don’t let that slow you down. Marketers need to be in the field. It is vital to the job, career and discipline. Tags: Marketing | Sales | field visits | sales guys | marketeers

This past weekend my family and I helped out a friend. We walked in the Diabetes walk in Orem, UT. While we walked our friend told us all about JDRF...www.jdrf.org/. It is amazing how many people are affected by diabetes--both types I and II. It is also amazing how life-changing it is for those who are afflicted by the disease. Our friend told us about his journey and how it has completely changed his life and his family's too. As I walked 3+ miles with my six-year-olds and nine-year-old I thought about how diabetes has a bad brand and, hence, has to deal with miscontrued messaging. In the general media and public diabetes is an outcome of obesity or poor health; yet, this is not true. For the majority of people it is a genetic disease and cannot be avoided or prevented, unfortunately. With research dollars tight around the country and causes fighting for space in the public sector, it would behoove JDRF to build more evangelists in their patients and help educate the population. I am sure they are working on their messaging and brand. But for right now they are an example of how mass communication can skew a message negatively. | ARK - Renew Your Faith in Humankind |

Last week I had a great experience while working for one of our clients, The American Academy. I got to hang out with one of their students and his family. The Loeckens drove through town to visit the school and their staff. The key is what they drove into town in--Their Home! Their home switched from a 4500 sq. ft. home in the suburbs of Atlanta to a 70 ft. RV that pulls their family car loaded down with bicycles, gear and a motorcycle. Their "tour" is called The ARK--passing Acts of Random Kindness. While they were in town we wanted to share their story with the local media. Alex was able to get some time on Fox 13 morning show on Friday. Alex and I met super early to make sure that we got to the station to guarantee all was in order for the live interview. ![]() Before the interview we hung out with the Loekens and met each of them. They are really great people. Their adventure is giving me renewed faith in humankind, just like StoryCorps does. They were very gracious and grateful for all that The American Academy and Sprout did for them that morning and for their high school-aged son, Ben. Tags: Hits: 334 | Read more... |
| Top 3 Reasons Why I Love My Job |
| 2008.09.06 05:33:36 | |
Marketing, Ah the sound of it just makes my skin tingle. Here are the top three reasons why I love to work in marketing. ![]() 1. Learning Different Cultures In marketing I get to meet and learn about people, industries, and products in areas that I would never dreamed of. Who would have thought that I would know the in's and out's of dentistry, or animal wound care, or groundwater mapping? 2. Building a Brand Everything about a brand excites me. From its conception to its sunset and how it grows throughout its lifecycle. 3. Integrating New Practices Marketing is dynamic. Every day I learn new things from my friends and colleagues. Sometimes it can be overwhelming. But, in reality, it is very exciting to be in a world that is constantly adding and augmenting the way we work and deliver results. Tags: Hits: 344 | Read more... |
| The mullet brand--Is that a good thing for your image? |
| 2008.08.12 13:26:22 | |
Today I saw a guy rockin' out in his Pontiac Firebird. I must admit I sped up to see how long his mullet was. ![]() My extra speed got me thinking about brands. Does Pontiac want the mullet brand image? When I worked for Anheuser-Busch on the Budweiser brand our main mission was to change the brand image from "my dad's beer" to "my beer". Budweiser did it throughout an integrated marketing plan. Everything that they touched had to have a hip, cool appeal. It worked for awhile. Remember the frogs? Brands can change, but just like anything you have to admit you want the change and then commit to making it happen. That commitment has to last so the change sustains in the mind of the consumer. By the way, the driver didn't have a mullet. I must admit that I was a bit disappointed. Tags: Hits: 453 | Read more... |
